October Magic: Jim Leyland Sings The Hits
At the risk of rehashing yesterday's post on archival baseball silliness and the timelessness of things that never really had any serious contextual purchase, I'll just acknowledge that the video below is not new.
As far as we know, Jim Leyland has not gone on the Motown studio tour and sung "Betcha By Golly Wow" by The Stylistics since 2009, when the Detroit Free Press ran this brief, wonderful video of a turtleneck'ed Leyland putting his cigarette-mellowed pipes to admirable use. This does not, however, mean that Leyland is not doing this regularly. He is probably busy right now, honestly. His Tigers, lopsided and unequal and very good, are in the World Series, and so he probably does not have time to go to Berry Gordy's place and sing Eddie Kendricks songs. Probably. We don't know for sure. So let's hold onto that slim chance.

Even with things on the skids, it may be a little to late for Tigers Manager Jim Leyland to think of an alternative career.
But if not for baseball, Leyland tells MLB Networks's "Studio 42 With Bob Costas," that he might have been a singer, according to the Detroit Free Press. He said his family was musical.

I am (for once) not being facetious. It’s completely unexpected, because his speaking voice is so gruff, but the man can carry a tune. The first time I watched the video I thought that we were hearing a recording and Leyland had not started singing yet. He’s certainly loads better at singing than I am.
Bonus points in the video for the Tigers players watching him sing in a kind of quiet awe, and for Dombrowski cracking up at the end. Let’s face it, if we had been getting this kind of Tigers content all offseason long, it would have been much more bearable.
