Footballz Podcast, Week 7: Monday Night Live

Anyone can sit on the sidelines and critique, provided they have a chair or a couch or a wide, flat rock on which to sit. It is easy for me, in my comfortable chair, to sit here and tell you that I think most people who talk about the NFL on television combine the coherence and incisiveness of Dan Dierdorf after taking a bottle of Nyquil to the neck with the rhetorical skill of, um, Dan Dierdorf in the situation mentioned earlier in this sentence. I will tell you that right now: I think the vast majority of people talking about the NFL on TV are just that good.

But also I am here in my chair, and no one will know or care if I speak, about the NFL or anything else. No one will bother to criticize it. This is a luxury, and it works out well for me and those like me who enjoy criticizing the way people talk about the NFL, but it is a different and smaller thing than attempting to do it yourself. As Jon Gruden himself famously said, "It's the man in the arena who is good, okay? That's the guy, I'll tell you what, that's the guy I want to get into a foxhole with, all right? And that's football."

Why mention this now? Because tonight, Footballz Talk steps into the arena. While you will be able to listen to their show here and at during Monday Night Football, as always, Boston-area people will also be able to watch them do the show live, at Parlor Sports in Somerville. (You should definitely go to this if you are in Boston, by the way; I can say, from my brief experience talking to him before Week 1, that once you get past how startlingly handsome he is, TD is quite pleasant to be around.)

This bold gambit on the part of our football-talking heroes is best understood, I think, as a challenge accepted: Mac and TD are going to be out there, where all can see and none can hide, and they are going to do their thing there, without a net and in public. They will not be alone, though. Lending support, or at any rate coming by and watching some football and making some jokes, will be Fenway Park DJ TJ Connelly and Boston comedy luminaries Shaun Bedgood, Kofi Thomas, and Ken Reid.

We are all, as always, in this Surviving Football thing together. We all have a dang Cardinals game to watch in prime time, on ESPN. We are all in the arena, now. We might as well show up.

Or, of course, you could just listen here:

Footballz is on Mixlr

And chat it up here:

Whichever you think is best, really.
